KEY PRAGMATIC FUNCTIONS OF THE SECONDARY NOMINATIONS OF QUANTITY IN ENGLISH JOURNALISTIC DISCOURSE

Abstract

The article is devoted to the necessity of establishing cognitive features of the secondary nominations of quantity functioning in texts of the journalistic discourse. Human learning of the material world is inevitably marked by allocation of its facts and objects quantitative characteristics. Thus, the verbalizers of the category of quantity outcome as a linguistic product of its comprehension by people.

It is noted in the article that in the process of communication, the linguistic cognition goes beyond the limits of the system, interpreting the quantitative properties of real objects through the

instruments of metaphorical and semantic derivation. The secondary nominations of quantity received along with the quantitative aspect of the object refereed obtain also expressive, emotional and axiological charge. The author of the article emphasizes that the unique features of journalistic discourse (necessity of forming an information flow and expressing an actual opinion within the newspaper article) forms a rigid requirement for the selection of instruments making the text more evocative. It is stated that the secondary nominations of quantity possess the abilities of actualizing indefinite quantity as well as estimation. Thus, they appear to be an effective means of realizing the goals of newspaper articles. The empirical data demonstrates that the secondary nominations of quantity are mostly used as figures of speech like metaphors and metonymy. It is emphasized that multifunctionality of secondary nominations with indefinite quantitative semantics possess the ability to become semantically modified. The empirical material demonstrates the effectiveness of quantitative metaphors and metonymy, as the secondary object obtains the quantitative characteristics of the primary one due to the associations. That makes them potential expressers of the author’s emotional attitude to the object described in the article. It is proved that secondary nominations with the indefinite quantity semantics perform such key textual functions as expressive, evaluative and emotional. It is concluded that due their functional upload they efficiently fulfill the primary tasks of journalistic texts.
