Abstract

The given article presents an attempt to study narrative space in A. Nothomb’s dialogic novel “The Enemy’s Cosmetique” as a representative of mass literature in the light of possible worlds theory. The paper in line with a general direction of linguistic studies toward the study of connection between language and thinking, author’s in particular. The paper follows cognitive and communicative linguistic approaches to the literary text study. The aim of the article lies in studying verbalization features of possible worlds in a dialogic novel. The main attention is paid to the world of missed opportunities and a search world the research of which is realized within the communicative situation of the character’s personality split. The examined possible worlds are identified through verbal markers by means of contextual, situational, interpretative analysis, and common sense logics. The applied methods reveal lexical and grammatical means that present character’s “escape” to the possible world. Particular attention is paid to hypothetical, conditional constructions and interrogative sentences. It has been pointed out that the world of missed opportunities is represented by hypothetical constructions and circumstance lexical units as time markers. A search world is marked by interrogative sentences and conditional constructions. Such signals as interrogative particles, pronouns, determinatives are “windows” to the possible world. Much attention is given to role of context. The paper outlines the correlation of time and space possible worlds localization with a real character’s stay (waiting room, airport, plane). The time and the place of action create a communicative situation where the character is forced to enter into dialogue with his interior enemy. Thus, the possible worlds under consideration get a logical explanation: tense atmosphere – verbal duel – suicide. It has been established that further research perspective is seen in the application of the suggested methodology to the study of other possible words in A. Nothomb’s prose, of space and time continuum, conceptual filling and genre peculiarities.
