Abstract

Purpose. The purpose of this study is to determine the peculiarities of the zoonyms-terms in the Ukrainian language from cognitive perspective. In the process of analysis the following tasks are solved: 1) the study of the features of zoonyms-terms in the semasiological and onomasiological plan; 2) the analyses of the system relations within the studied terminology units; 3) consideration of the main types of motivation for zoonyms of the Ukrainian language in the onomasiological aspect.

Methods. The paper uses the structural and cognitive methods of linguistics. A distributive method that involves obtaining classification, and systematization component analysis are used within the framework of the structural lingnisties. In particular, the system relations in the semantic structure of notions-zoonyms are studied in the article by classifying the degree of motivation. Metaphorical analysis is used within the framework of cognitive linguistics.

Results. Zoonyms are characterized by a variety of semantic relations (synonymous, antonymic) in the semasiological plane. Absolute synonyms, that is synonyms-doublets and derivative synonyms that were formed on the basis of the Greek or Latin roots (which are) are the most common among synonyms. Antonymic relations are observed within the same concept. In the actual Ukrainian vocabulary, they are most often formed in a prefixal way, where prefixes denote, as a rule, the absence of a sign contained in the original word.

The cognitive basis of zoonym terms is represented by motivational groups in the onomasiological aspect. In particular, the terms of absolute motivation are most adapted to the system of the Ukrainian language. The terms of full motivation consist of both a single word and a phrase. The specificity of the one-word terms of full motivation is that they are complex in structure. The terms of partial motivation are traditionally divided into: 1) terms that denote the names of sciences or their units, a collection of animals for the designation of which an unimportant single name; 2) terms that denote a particular set in the form of family, class; 3) non-motivated terms in which the etymon is known, but it is either not clearly defined, or its origin is unknown and in the long run completely unmotivated words.

Conclusions. Biological terminology is in line with the nomenclature, since it is intended primarily to denote classes, families, rows, etc. in a cognitive way. It is aimed primarily at performing a denotative function. The cognitive aspect of the study of terms is determined by two approaches: semasiological and onomasiological. Zoonyms are characterized by a variety of semantic relations (synonymous, antonymic) in the semasiological plane. The cognitive basis of the notion in the conceptual-conceptual aspect is represented by motivational groups (absolute motivation, complete motivation, partial motivation, absence of any motivation).
