Abstract

The article focuses on defining the tendencies of postmodern American poetic speech via analysis of linguistic and extralinguistic factors of verbal poetic images formation and functioning in poetic texts. In the framework of the article it is assumed that the dominant type of a literary conscience and kind of poetic thinking in a certain cultural period and poetic school cause changes in the semantics and structure of a verbal poetic image leading to the emergence of its novel type. It has been established that in postmodernism alongside with the dominant tendency to convergence of images one can trace the tendency to divergence leading to gestalt-free and thing-free images, blurred emotiveness of the text. In the context of the article it is argued hat the type of the literary conscience and the kind of poetic thinking influence the development of various poetic schools and trends. Special attention is drawn to a most specific trend of postmodern American poetry – metarealism or language poetry. The specificity of this school is predetermined by such artistic features of postmodernism as decentralization of a text structure, eclecticism, fragmentation of the world description. It has also been noticed that stylistic devices of modernism especially parodox and irony has undergone changes because of the development of essayistic poetic thinking. The latter is understood as viewing the described phenomenon from various angles. As a result panoramic description of the world is achieved. Essayistic thinking alongside with paradoxical one are characteristic of language poetry where these kinds of poetic thinking gave rise to the formation of a new type of verbal poetic image – metabolae. In this novel type of verbal poetic image the significate and the signifier are merged, incongruent and contrastive images are integrated. Given that, it is stressed in the article that the representatives of this school try to reconstruct the internal form of the word, its etymological and archetypal meaning, they intend not only revive the archetypes but reconstruct them and construe a new textual world free from stereotypes embodied in the texts of mass media.
