Abstract

The article is devoted to the classification of substantive linguistic means of the direct nomination of state in English-Canadian poetry. Selected substantive nominations are divided into two groups: common and proper names. It is determined that each of these groups has in the analyzed poems two main functions: identifying, the gist of which is denotation of Canada’s status on different stages of its statehood’s development, and relative, when nominative units are aimed at the identifying of the distinctive peculiarities of the Canadian state. Special attention is drawn to the systematization of the substantive nominations of both types according to the semantic principle.
