Abstract

The article outlines the main gender stereotypes about the woman in the Australian literary discourse that help to formate the images. The concept of literary discourse is analyzed. The main features of the image of women as ethno-cultural formation are defined. The literary discourse as a phenomenon of national culture contains various aspects of human existence, including the gender factor. Gender studies allow us to analyze the texts in a new way, as a reflection of the picture of the world, where the male and female view of the world and the relationships of the sexes are visually and deeply embodied. The most interesting in this regard is Australian prose, which reflects the state of women in society and stereotyped images of it. In the Australian literary discourse there are stereotyped images of woman relating to all types of human activities and their states, therefore stereotypes about women in Australian literary texts are analyzed according to the scheme: appearance, age, intellect, speech, because a person is thought primarily as dynamic.
